Leanne Oates Vanecek

Leanne Vanecek specializes in data breach analysis, privacy litigation, and privacy compliance matters. An experienced counselor, she helps clients navigate the consequences of privacy violations caused by malware, hacking, and physical theft. She also represents clients who have been subject to internal compliance failures; such failures may include misdelivery of confidential materials, insecure disposal of data, and inadvertent publishing of private information. Her practice also includes white collar defense, internal investigations, and business litigation.

Ms. Vanecek has represented Fortune 500 companies, universities, government agencies, and individuals in a variety of matters. She has represented clients in a range of industries, including health care, energy, education, finance, and others. Prior to joining the firm, she worked at the Los Angeles offices of Irell & Manella LLP.

Ms. Vanecek is a Certified Information Privacy Professional in U.S. private-sector privacy laws and regulations (CIPP/US). The CIPP is the pre-eminent credential in the field of information privacy.

Ms. Vanecek earned her J.D. from UCLA School of Law in 2011, where she served as a Symposium Editor for the UCLA Law Review and was named to the Order of the Coif. She earned her B.A. in theatre, summa cum laude, from Arizona State University in 2004.


  • Represented a national health care organization in communications and negotiations with the California attorney general regarding data breach incidents involving personal information. Advised client with regard to the avoidance of future incidents.
  • Advised a California university regarding the appropriate response to a potential data breach incident involving the personal information of its students.
  • Obtained summary judgment for Sempra Energy, a Fortune 500 energy services company, in a cross-border dispute relating to a billion-dollar liquefied natural gas terminal [see “Sempra Energy defeats lawsuit alleging malicious prosecution” in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, and “Sempra wins one showdown with Mexican rancher” in the San Diego Tribune].
  • Conducted internal investigation for a large university regarding alleged violations of the False Claims Act in connection with scientific research.
  • Represents individuals and organizations in response to grand jury and SEC subpoenas.
  • Represents corporate executive in connection with state and federal investigations over securities and criminal law violations.
