In ‘Novel’ Jurisdiction Issue, 9th Circuit Limits Where Consumers Can Sue E-Commerce Payment Platforms

Hueston Hennigan prevailed in a published decision on an important issue of first impression in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In ruling for our client, Shopify, the Court is the first to address the issue of personal jurisdiction involving online platforms.

“We appreciate the Ninth Circuit’s thorough opinion affirming our legal arguments,” Kaba said in a statement. “As the opinion notes, it is important that long-established, traditional limits on the exercise of personal jurisdiction are applied fairly to online businesses.”
